Vision of Nikolaos Plastiras (Greek general and Prime Minister, 1883 – 1953), born at Morfovouni and to whom it owes its name, the artificial lake Plastiras was created in 1959 with the completion of the dam. During World War II an allied airfield operated in its place and it was here that the first allied aircraft landing in Greece took place in 1943. Today the lake is used for irrigation while also providing electricity to the national grid.
It contains 400.000.000 cubic meters of water, its surface covers 24 square kilometers and its highest depth is 60 meters. At an altitude of 750 meters, lake Plastiras is a rare example of how a man-made creation can generate such exquisite beauty in perfect harmony with the natural landscape.
